This is the first year I've ever received a letter from Honda advertising their updated maps, but it's still entirely voluntary. Whether you keep your maps updated is entirely up to you. I'm pretty sure the Nav unit is manufactured by Alpine which uses NavTeq maps.Īs far as I know, Alpine has provided updated maps annually for Honda vehicles and the price has been roughly the same for the last 5 years.

That the end (I assume), so it's back to work now.Īddendum - just to add salt to the wound, last night I got another email from Honda about ordering the Nav update AND another email from my dealership about bringing the car in for scheduled service. So, as I told all the people I talked to I would do, I'm now telling everyone I know about this so they don't get ripped off by Honda. Once again, I had someone telling me how he understood my concern - but wasn't actually going to do anything about it. I pointed out that that was a bunch of crap and that we paid Honda for the car and nav system so it's up to Honda to fix the problem. He just passed the buck again and claims that it's Alpine's fault since they make the actual nav system and the update disk. I just got a (blocked!) call from someone named Joanathan at Honda. I emailed the saleswoman we originally bought the car from to let her know what was going on and that I expected a better response from Honda if they ever wanted us as a future customer. I called that and explained it again to another person, who was also nice but said all he could do was forward the info to the dealer we bought the car from (Norm Reeves Honda) and that they might do something. The customer support person was very nice but said that the navigation group doesn't set the price and gave me the number for Honda customer service. I usually hae to check my iPhone to make sure it's not trying to send us into the middle of a freeway pileup. The Honda unit doesn't even have traffic data.

I quickly found some nice GPS units on with 5" screens, FREE LIFETIME MAP UPDATES and FREE TRAFFIC ALERTS. I could only assume that they believe their customers are really stupid. I couldn't believe that they were not only trying to rip people off for this, but make them feel like they were getting a great deal with the free shipping. The letter made a big deal of how they were giving us free shipping on the disk - oh boy! Oh yeah - they wanted $185 for the disk! Not really - a year and a half went by and I finally just got a letter from Honda about the update disk. No big surprise and I figured there would be an update soon. When we got it, we quickly saw that the GPS was missing many recently biult roads in our area. It was certainly more expensive than a 3rd-party model, but thought it was worth it since it was all integrated. When I got the Insight for Meri last year, I got the fancy version with the in-dash navigation system. Well, it looks like our Insight is our first and last Honda since I won't ever buy anything again from a company with their horrible business practices.
